While the fate of the NCAA may hinge on the O'Bannon case entering its second week today, there's already been one settlement that will likely earn current and former Utes some extra change.
EA Sports and the NCAA each settled cases over video game licensing that will pay $60 million to up to 100,000 potential athletes, as long as they file a claim. The settlement is the first time the NCAA is paying student athletes for their likeness rights, and possibly is an ill omen for college sports' governing body in its other lawsuits.
Utes football and men's basketball players are likely to get e-mails or mail about how to claim their share of the settlement, which is likely at least a few hundred dollars per player.
It's also worth mentioning my colleague Matt Piper did a story on the U.'s self-reported NCAA violations. Very few are earth-shattering, and some are downright inconsequential. But you can read about them here.
Here's what else was happening at the U. this week:
Women's track and field • Rosalie Waller became the Utes' first-ever All-American in the 800 meters at the NCAA national track and field championships, finishing as an honorable mention. The senior ran a 2:06.45 to finish sixth in her semifinal heat, capping a strong career for the Utes.
On deck: Season over.
Football • Quarterback-turned-wide receiver Micah Thomas is looking for greener pastures, electing to transfer from the Utes rather than try his hand at wideout this fall. Utah also had a team autograph event where fans were excited to meet-n-greet, but still have clearly reined in expectations a smidge for the 2014 season.
On deck • Season over.
Baseball • As Matt reported last week, a bunch of Utah baseball players and recruits were selected in the MLB Draft. This past week, Tanner Banks signed with the White Sox and Mitch Watrous signed with the Padres. The Tampa Bay Rays are looking to sign Utes recruit Spencer Moran, but haven't yet locked him up.
On deck • Season over.
Volleyball • Two Utes are going to compete in China: Shelby Dalton will join the U.S. Collegiate National Team, while Chelsey Schofield will be with the Pac-12 All-Star team. Games start this week.
On deck • Season over.
