An elderly couple remained hospitalized Tuesday, the day after their pickup truck rear-ended a slow-moving semi trailer rig on Interstate 80.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the crash occurred on eastbound I-80, near the crest of Parleys Summit, at 9:18 p.m. Monday.

UHP did not immediately release the identities of the couple, other than to say they were over 70 years of age.

Rescue workers had to extricate the man and woman from the wreckage of their blue pickup truck before flying the critically injured male by helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake City. The female, in serious condition, was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The semi driver was not hurt.

UHP was investigating the cause of the accident.
