Motorcyclist dies from injuries in St. George crash

A motorcyclist died after a Jeep crashed into him near a St. George intersection.

About 2 p.m. Saturday, an eastbound Jeep drifted into the center turn lane of Riverside Drive and was on a collision course with a Ford Ranger waiting to turn left onto 2450 East, according to a St. George police news release. When the Jeep veered left into the westbound lanes, it had veered into the path of three oncoming motorcyclists, the release adds.

"The motorcyclists were riding in a staggered formation and one of the first two motorcycles was struck by the Jeep, which caused the motorcycle to slide into the other motorcycle," according to the news release. "... the third motorcycle in line was in the direct path of the Jeep and was struck by the front of the Jeep."

One of the riders was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered severe head trauma from the force of the impact. He died later that evening, according to the release. Police have not released the rider's name.

Another motorcyclist struck by the Jeep sustained injuries to his lower extremities and was later taken into surgery. At this point, his injuries do not appear life threatening.

The crash is still under investigation.
