Letter: Officer's past heroism irrelevant in dog shooting

The Salt Lake City police chief appeared on television and referred to an officer who killed a dog as a "hero" because of prior actions in a 2007 incident, and then offered the fact that he's a veteran police officer and a family man with children as part of the defense. None of it has any bearing on the specific tragic event from that afternoon.
The police have done what they always do, closed ranks to protect their own and excuse the behavior.
We're supposed to be reassured by their internal investigation. Isn't that a bit like asking the fox to watch the hen house?
