Monday on TV: 'Under the Dome' is over-the-top dumb

OK, I give up. On Under the Dome (9 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2) that is.

I probably should have given up on it earlier, as did several of my TV critic pals. But I stuck with it through Season 1, hoping that we'd get some answers to this giant, invisible, impenetrable dome that suddenly appeared over a small American town.

And after the hot mess that was the Season 1 finale, I was pretty much done.

However ... it's my job to watch TV. And I held out some small hope that the Season 2 premiere would recapture my interest.

Nope. It's an even bigger mess. Although I will admit I derived some enjoyment out of just how dumb it is.

I'll avoid spoilers. But CBS has already widely advertised that the dome becomes magnetized in tonight's episode. And, yes, all sorts of metal things fly toward it and stick. Guns. Nails. Barbecue grills. Large vehicles. So you don't want to be between those things and the dome.

However ... if you look closely at the scene when several of the characters are on a road dodging flying cars and trucks, it looks very much like they're standing next to a barbed wire fence. And the metal barbed wire isn't reacting to the giant magnet at all.

Hoo, boy.

That's not the reason I'm giving up on "Under the Dome." It's trivial compared to the increasingly annoying narrative, which is definitely not worth wasting any more time on.

American Ninja Warrior (8 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5): Qualifying concludes in Denver.

24: Live Another Day (8 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13): Audrey confronts Mark; the terror threat widens.

Beauty and the Beast (8 p.m., CW/Ch. 30): Gabe takes Cat on a romantic date.

Murder In the First (8 and 10 p.m. TNT): Terry and Hildy deal with fallout from a shooting.

Mistresses (9 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4): Dom deals with the fallout of unmasking his romance with Savi.

Switched at Birth (9 p.m., ABC Family): Regina persuades Daphne to go out for a Latina college scholarship.

The Fosters (10 p.m., ABC Family): Stef and Lena go on vacation before the baby is born.

Longmire (11 p.m., A&E): Walt tries to narrow the list of suspects in his wife's murder.
