UPD: Violent gang fugitive caught after tip

Unified Police say a fugitive violent street gang member wanted on numerous firearms and robbery counts has been arrested and jailed.

Jacob Drake Vigil, 23, was being held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday under a U.S. Marshals Office hold order.

UPD Sgt. Paul Barker said that officers from the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit, acting on a tip, nabbed Vigil about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday outside a Smith's market near 4100 S. Redwood Road, in West Valley City.

Despite Vigil having early been described as "armed and dangerous," he was unarmed and did not resist when arrested, Barker said.

UPD did not specifically identify Vigil's alleged gang affiliation, but noted that he had been the subject of at least four federal arrest warrants relating to discharge of a firearm and a robbery.

Third District Court records show guilty pleas by Vigil in 2011 to third-degree attempted robbery and in 2012 for assault and vehicle burglary — plea deals in which other charges, ranging from fleeing police and criminal mischief to theft were dismissed.

UPD said his criminal record extends outside the state and includes other alleged theft, drug and weapons violations.
