PCL baseball: After trade, Tony Campana helps Salt Lake defeat El Paso

It was a night for new faces at Smith's Ballpark.

After Utah Jazz draft picks Dante Exum and Rodney Hood each threw out a ceremonial first pitch Saturday, Tony Campana played his first game with the Bees.

Campana, a speedy 28-year-old outfielder, was acquired by the Los Angeles Angels and assigned to Salt Lake after a four-player trade with Arizona.

In his debut with the Bees, Campana went 2-for-4 and helped Salt Lake defeat El Paso, 5-3.

Campana started the season in the major leagues and has played a total of 26 games in two stints with the Diamondbacks. But he was back in Triple-A with Reno before the trade.

Informed of the pending deal following Reno's 6-4 loss to Sacramento on Friday night, Campana made it to Salt Lake in time to bat leadoff against El Paso.

"It's cool," he said before the game. "I go about my business — the way I do it. I'm going to play my game. Run around as much as I can. Get on base. See what happens."

Campana isn't bitter about being traded by the Diamondbacks.

"I got to break camp with them out of spring training," he said. "That's the first time I ever got to do that. I was with them for about a month but struggled at the plate. When that happens, you're going to get sent down."

Campana batted .150 with the Diamondbacks this season, but he enjoyed a moment-to-remember on June 18.

In the bottom of the ninth against Milwaukee, his walk-off single gave Arizona a 4-3 victory. The winning hit came off Brandon Kintzler, who's made 105 relief appearances since the start of the 2013 season for the Brewers.

"It was OK up there," Campana said. "It wasn't what I wanted it to be because you want to be there all the time. But I've had some good moments up there."

To secure pitcher Joe Thatcher and Campana from Arizona, the Angels sent minor-league prospects Zach Borenstein and Joey Krehbiel to the Diamondbacks.

"Anytime you're wanted, it's a good feeling," he said. "They came and got me, so that makes me feel good."

To make room for Campana on the roster, Salt Lake sent Matt Long to Arkansas in the Class AA Texas League. —
