Utah County Sheriff: Suicidal, armed man found alive, well

After a tense daylong search for an armed and suicidal man turned up empty, Utah County sheriff's deputies found him alive and safe at his mother's house Monday night.

Deputies had descended on a neighborhood near 13000 West and 15000 South in Elberta about 9:30 a.m. Monday after the man's family called 911, reporting he was armed and threatening to kill himself.

Initially believing the man had barricaded himself inside his home, deputies set up a containment area, only to learn several hours later — after using a SWAT unit robot to check inside — that he was not in the residence.

A search of the area ensued, spreading out from an RV in the home's backyard to the neighborhood in general.

Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said deputies confirmed the man was at his mother's home about 6:30 p.m. Monday, after family notified them of his whereabouts. The handgun he had earlier been carrying was recovered, and his family was seeking counseling for him.

Cannon said it appeared the man was unaware deputies had surrounded his home, having left the residence some time beforehand.

No charges were anticipated.
