The Cache County Sheriff's Office has identified a teenage boy who drowned while swimming with his family at Hyrum State Park.
Sheriff's Lt. Doyle Peck said Tucker Smith, 14, of American Fork, was swimming in a cove in the southwest area of the reservoir with his older brother and cousins Wednesday night. Smith was attempting to swim between the reservoir's west and east banks when he tired, attempted to turn back, and began to panic.
Family members called 911 and both boaters and emergency personnel tried to rescue the boy, but he sank beneath the waves about 7:30 p.m. and did not resurface, Smith said.
Boaters, search and rescue workers and a dive team from the Utah Highway Patrol spent the next two hours searching for the youth. At 9:35 p.m., his body was found in 8 feet of water, just 15 feet from the shoreline.
