A woman was shot to death Thursday in the southern Utah town of Parowan and her 83-year-old stepfather has been taken into custody, authorities said.

The Iron County Sheriff's Office said dispatchers received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. concerning an assault involving a firearm near 300 South and 800 West. When officers from the Parowan Police Department and surrounding agencies arrived at the scene, they discovered a 57-year-old woman had been fatally shot.

Police believe Nathan Zimmerman shot the woman once when she arrived at the residence, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office has not released any other details about the shooting, including the name of the victim.

Fifth District Court records show that Zimmerman's wife filed for divorce on Thursday. Most information in Utah divorce cases is sealed from public view because it is considered private and no details of that filing were available.
