Three arrested in gang-related slaying in S. Salt Lake

South Salt Lake police have arrested three men in the gang-related shooting death of a 40-year-old West Valley City man last month.

SSLPD spokesman Gary Keller said the arrests took place late Thursday, two of the suspects being nabbed at unspecified West Valley City locations and the third in South Salt Lake.

Being held without bail Friday in the Salt Lake County Jail were Irving Nunez, 20, and Irvin Esequel Munoz, 19, both of West Valley City, and 19-year-old Ernesto Navarro of South Salt Lake. All three were being held on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated murder.

Keller confirmed that police took the trio into custody without incident, and also recovered a handgun matching the weapon believed used in the slaying.

The three were sought in the fatal June 23 shooting of 40-year-old Francisco Antonio Colon. A 17-year-old male with Colon suffered minor gunshot wounds in an arm and his torso.

While gang involvement has been confirmed, detectives continue to look for a specific motive for the shooting. Earlier, police indicated that the suspects and the victim had been in an earlier confrontation, but details were not released.

Colon was parked near 150 E. Helm St. (3645 South) and gunshots were fired from a nearby alley.

The case will be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, Keller said.
