Long Beach WR Jameson Field to join Utes in August

His senior year highlight tape shows him pushing around defensive backs to open space for ball-toting teammates, but Jameson Field says Ute fans can expect more from him than that.

Field told The Tribune by phone Friday morning that he plans to join the Utes in August and will be given a scholarship. He didn't play any football in 2013, opting to enroll at Long Beach Community College and train with former Utes Anthony Denham and Shaky Smithson, current Ute Kaelin Clay and incoming walk-on Tyler Cooperwood.

He says he's grown since "pushing 5'10" at powerhouse Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif. Now, he says, he's 5'11, 183 pounds and was clocked at 4.42 in the 40-yard dash this February.

When he met Utah coaches at a Long Beach camp last month, "they said you have a great opportunity," he said. "You look like you're ready to go play D-I right now."

Other schools, he said, wanted to see him play a year first at Long Beach.

Field, like Cooperwood, said he's been told by coaches that they see a need at the inside slot position.

Cooperwood isn't the only walk-on wideout the Utes have invited (Travis Wilson high school teammate Dominick Ela is among the others), and the Utes also have commitments from four 2015 wideouts — signaling an urgency to restock as Clay and Dres Anderson embark on their senior seasons and junior Kenneth Scott has a degree in hand and all the attributes of a potential NFL draft pick.
