Helper, Trappers Orange stay unbeaten in Legion tournament

Cole Fossat pitched and hit defending champion Helper to a 4-2 victory over St. George in the winner's bracket of the Utah State American Legion baseball tournament in Logan Monday.

Fossat hit a walk off two-run homer in the ninth inning to keep Helper unbeaten and recorded his second tournament win on the mound.. Helper plays Trappers Orange, one of two teams from Mountain Crest, at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Logan in a battle between the remaining two unbeaten squads in the 12-team double elimination tournament.

Trappers Orange beat Layton 4-3 in Smithfield Monday to also stay undefeated.

The winner of the tournament advances to the American Legion regionals in Glendale, Ariz.

In loser's bracket games Monday, Logan defeated Bear River 4-3 and Herriman knocked out Northridge 17-1. Herriman then defeated Logan 7-5 in a second game to stay alive. Trappers Blue, another squad from Mountain Crest, knocked off Cyprus 4-3 while Box Elder defeated Syracuse 5-4. Trappers Blue then took a 10-6 win over Box Elder.

In losers' bracket games in Logan Tuesday, Layton meets Trappers Blue at 2 p.m. And Herriman tests St. George at 5 p.m.
