VERNAL, Utah • Federal land managers are extending a temporary ban on camping at a popular site near eastern Utah's Book Cliffs.

Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Megan Crandall said in a Thursday statement the agency wants to avoid potential run-ins between campers and bears.

Last weekend, a black bear reportedly broke into two unoccupied camping trailers, rummaged through cupboards and noshed on cans.

Wildlife officials say daytime visitors to the PR Springs and Willow Canyon areas should keep an eye out until the bear is captured.

They believe the bear climbed in through the top of one camper after removing a skylight but don't know how the bear got inside the second trailer.

The ban on overnight stays is in effect until August 13. The areas remain open for day use.
