UHP hunting for hit-and-run pickup and trailer

Law enforcement officers throughout northern Utah were on the lookout Friday for a pickup truck and trailer involved in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 215 that left a 7-year-old girl in critical condition.

Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Dwayne Baird said the incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Thursday when the pickup, purportedly hauling a trailer without rear lights, sideswiped a car on southbound I-215 near 1300 West. The car then crashed into a sound wall on the right side of the freeway.

Inside the car were four children, none of them properly restrained in child car seats, troopers said. Two of the children were transported to Primary Children's Hospital, where the 7-year-old girl remained in critical condition, though her vital signs had been stabilized as of Friday.

A 3-year-old also remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition with non-life threatening injuries, UHP said.

Meantime, UHP put out a region-wide "attempt to locate" for the pickup and trailer. The truck was a full-sized Ford, wither black or dark green in color and with front end damage. The trailer was a single-axle utility type rig.
