Three to four inches of water covers the salt flats from rainstorms last week, canceling the scheduled Speed Week. According to Mike Manghelli of the Southern California Timing Association, which sponsors Speed Week, this was the first time since 1994 that the annual event has been postponed because of water on the course. There was no racing in 1993 and 1994. The group hopes to have an event called the World Finals in late September-early October if conditions permit.
