UPD: Kearns woman tells cops she stabbed spouse over a nuke

Unified Police say alcohol and mental illness both apparently played roles in a domestic fight that ended with a Kearns man stabbed and his wife in jail.

The 53-year-old victim was listed in fair condition Thursday at Intermountain Medical Center following the 11:18 p.m. Wednesday incident at a home near 4400 West and 5100 South.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said it was the man's 61-year-old wife who called 911, telling dispatchers she had just stabbed her husband.

When officers arrived they found all the doors locked. When they knocked on the home's back door, however, the woman came out.

A probable cause statement notes the woman told officers, "I have psychiatric problems," and then said she had "poked him in the chest because there is a nuclear bomb out there and he was helping put it there."

Officers then found the woman's spouse inside the house, bleeding from a chest wound.

The woman was arrested without further incident and booked into Salt Lake County Jail, where she remained without bail Thursday on suspicion of third-degree felony aggravated domestic assault.

Hoyal said investigators had not specifically determined what the woman had used to stab her husband.
