Venus Williams notches rare win over sister Serena

tennis • Venus Williams defeated Serena 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3 Saturday for the first win against her sister in more than five years and advanced to the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The 34-year-old Venus hadn't beaten her 32-year-old sister in five matches going back to Dubai in 2009. Top-ranked Serena still leads the all-time series 15-11.

In the second semifinal, third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3).

• In Toronto, Roger Federer advanced to the men's final, beating Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 to set up a match against upset-happy Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga beat his third straight higher-seeded opponent, topping seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-3. The 13th-seeded Frenchman beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic on Thursday and eighth-seeded Andy Murray on Friday.

Ledecky sets record in 400 freestyle

swimming • Katie Ledecky broke the world record in the 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. national championships Saturday night in Irvine, Calif., becoming the first woman since Janet Evans to hold world marks in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyles at the same time.

The 17-year-old from Bethesda, Maryland, won in 3 minutes, 58.86 seconds. She bettered the mark of 3:59.15 set by Italy's Federica Pellegrini at the 2009 world championships in Rome, when a raft of world records were broken during the apex of the high-tech suit era. Those suits were banned the following year, making world records harder to achieve.

Cierra Runge finished second in 4:04.67, and Leah Smith was third at 4:06.28.

Michael Phelps lost for the third time in the week, finishing sixth in the 100 backstroke. Olympic champion Matt Grevers won in 52.75. Phelps touched in 53.95.

Garcia, Petersonscore easy victories

Boxing • Light welterweight champion Danny Garcia remained unbeaten, stopping Rod Salka at 2:31 of the second round in a non-title fight at the Barclays Center in New York.

Garcia (29-0) is the WBC and WBA champion, and the two organizations didn't sanction the bout because Salka usually fights as a lightweight and isn't even considered to be among the 50 best fighters in that division.

Lamont Peterson (33-2-1) also fought an unheralded opponent, stopping New York native Edgar Santana at 2:48 of the 10th round to retain his IBF junior welterweight title.
