Jackson, Wyo. • The Jackson Town Council has backed off on the idea of allowing people to spend one night in their cars within city limits.

Citing fears that people would abuse the law and that car camping could proliferate throughout town, the council decided earlier this week to reject the idea.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (http://bit.ly/V4WCpe ) that the issue came up as the council discussed changes to the town's camping ordinance.

But councilors who initially supported allowing people to stay in their cars overnight now say police should have discretion to handle such situations.

The council approved a new proposed version of the camping ban and agreed to take out the amendment permitting a person to car camp for one day.
