Olympus Cove man charged with murdering his father

An Olympus Cove man has been charged with murdering his father by crushing his skull with a metal bar.

Officers were called Aug. 1 to the home at 4465 S. Mathews Way (4115 East), where Christopher Lynn Robbins, 29, lived with his father, Dennis Robbins, and a brother.

The brother awoke that morning to hear his father screaming, police wrote in charges filed Wednesday. As he left his bedroom, he saw Christopher walk out of their father's bedroom and take a pair of latex gloves off his hands. The brother went into the father's room and found him beaten and unresponsive. Dennis Robbins, 70, died before officers arrived. A metal bar was on the floor next to him.

Investigators wrote that Dennis Robbins was so badly beaten that medical examiners couldn't establish the number of blows to the head he suffered.

Christopher Robbins was arrested at the home. Blood was on his clothing and shoes, police wrote. He was charged in 3rd District Court with first-degree felony murder.

Christopher Robbins has a history of mental health-related problems, court records indicate. He attempted suicide in September 2004, after pleading guilty in Ogden's 2nd District Court to enticing a minor over the Internet, a third-degree felony.

He subsequently was sent to Utah State Prison for a 90-day evaluation, after which he was sentenced to six months in jail and 36 months probation.

In 2006, he was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty in Utah County Justice Court to class B misdemeanor sexual abuse of a minor.

In September 2011, he pleaded guilty to a class A misdemeanor count of failure to register as a sex offender, for which he was sentenced to a year in jail with all but 10 days suspended, and a year's probation.

Robbins is scheduled for an initial court appearance on the murder charge next Tuesday.
