Man dies from injuries suffered in Farmington demolition derby

Farmington • A 41-year-old man died from critical head injuries he suffered when a pickup truck at a Farmington demolition derby fell on him.

Davis County sheriff's Sgt. DeeAnn Servey confirmed Thursday morning that Bren Ewing, 41, of Hooper, had passed away overnight at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, where he had been airlifted Wednesday evening from the Davis County Fairgrounds.

Ewing, a member of the Intrepid Motorsports safety team, was attempting to aid the driver of the pickup after it was left on its side following a collision with an SUV on Wednesday night.

As Ewing worked to shut off fuel and help the driver get out, the truck's weight shifted, and it fell on him.

A medical team was on scene for the derby and immediately assisted Ewing, who was airlifted to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The two drivers involved in the crash were uninjured.

Servey said the incident remained under investigation.

"[Ewing] was a gentle, kind, generous and very forgiving man who has spent the past 15 years participating in demolition derbies across the country," his family said in a statement. "He was loved by all those who knew him."

Ewing is survived by his wife, six children, one grandchild and another grandchild who is expected to be born by the end of the month, the statement adds.

In July, a 50-year-old Nephi man was killed when he was struck by a car at the Delta Demolition Derby in Millard County.

That man was observing the event from behind a dirt berm, when a derby car,struck by another car, went over the berm and hit him.
