A motorcyclist died and his passenger was critically injured in a crash Thursday afternoon.

A witness called dispatchers about 3 p.m. about a man and woman, in their early 20s, in a possibly domestic dispute near 3500 S. State Street, said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Darin Sweeten. An officer was close by — but when he arrived and got out of his vehicle to talk to the couple, they jumped on the motorcycle and took off at a high rate of speed, Sweeten said.

The two were going south on State Street but crashed into a Jeep that turned left in front of them at 3750 South, Sweeten said.

Both were wearing helmets, but the man who was driving the motorcycle died at the scene, and his passenger went to the hospital in critical condition, the sergeant said. The driver of the Jeep also was taken to the hospital in fair condition.

Police are still investigating the crash, the sergeant said.
