Suspect arrested in S. Salt Lake shooting

Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting of a South Salt Lake man, who is now expected to survive — though he may lose an arm or leg.

South Salt Lake police Sgt. Darin Sweeten said Martin Cuevas, 48, of California, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on Friday morning on suspicion of attempted murder and illegally discharging a firearm within city limits.

Sweeten detectives were not releasing details of what led to Cuevas' arrest, though he was believed to be one of several people involved in an 8 p.m. Thursday argument between three people in a truck and two residents in a home near 200 E. Rigdon St. (3790 South).

According to a probable cause statement, Cuevas admitted to police that he had fired eight shots into the truck, striking 32-year-old Nathaniel McDonald. The reasons he fired remained unclear.

Sweeten said Cuevas and others interviewed at the scene "have not been entirely forthcoming."

However, Sweeten did say McDonald was expected to survive.

"He is still critical, but stable, and remains in ICU, though [doctors say] he may lose a limb or limbs," Sweeten said.
