Utah forecast: Back too soon, monsoon? Wet weather ahead

Back too soon, monsoon? Regardless, thunderstorms and rain showers were predicted to settle back in over portions of Utah as the new work week got underway.

Monday's forecast began with sunny weather and highs in the mid-90s, but by evening the cloud cover was to return, along with precipitation. Chances for thunderstorms increased in Tuesday's forecast, and accompanying rain showers were to push temperatures back into the low-80s.

A similar pattern of sunshine giving way to cloudy skies, along with evening thunder, lightning and rain, was on tap for southern Utah. Highs Monday were forecast to flirt with triple digits, but dip into the upper-80s come Tuesday.

The unsettled weather cycle prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the coming week for the western two-thirds of Utah. Waves of monsoonal moisture were moving out of the Four Corners area and north to wrap the state in a wet embrace.

The Utah Division of Air Quality rated Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber counties as "yellow," or compromised for air quality. The remainder of the state was in the "green," or healthy category heading into the new week.

The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website listed chenopods as "very high" and mold "high," while other allergens were graded "low" on the pollen index as of Monday.
