West Jordan students are mourning a high school sophomore who died along with his grandmother this weekend in a crash in Box Elder County.

Copper Hills High School confirmed on Monday that sophomore Jacob Santos died in the crash, 5:30 p.m. Saturday at 750 N. Main St. in Willard.

Santos, 15, and his grandmother, Ruth P. Nelson, 66, of Box Elder County, were traveling in a 2005 Lexus that collided with a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. The 31-year-old driver of the pickup was treated for minor injuries and released from Brigham City Hospital on Sunday.

Friends of Santos Tweeted their condolences and memories under the hashtag #RIPJacobSantos.

"He was a great friend, and he always had a smile on his face," one wrote.

"I'm grateful he was the very first friend I met when I moved to Utah," another said.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation on Monday. Results of that probe will be reviewed by the Box Elder County Attorney's Office.

However, Willard police said it was unlikely the truck's driver would be charged, since it appeared Santos, not seeing the approaching truck, drove into its path.
