Celebrating themes from Utah's bees to pets to sustainable sweets, the University of Utah's on-campus farmer's market will offer local produce and art beginning this week through early October.

The weekly Thursday market — which is open to the public — invites local growers and artisans to supply fresh produce, arts and crafts and other wares. The market will kick off Thursday with Sustainability Day, educating shoppers about recycling, solar power and other issues.

This year, U. students and anyone using food stamps can buy two market tokens for the price of one under a new program. The tokens are good for produce and for prepared foods, such as fresh breads and salsas.

Other area markets are also accepting Horizon cards, the debit-like card used to disperse the stamps.

The U. market runs Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 9 on the Tanner Plaza, between the Union and Student Services buildings.

Organizers are urging shoppers to walk, bike or take public transportation because parking is limited and it isn't validated.

Themes for upcoming weeks are:

Sept. 4: The fourth annual Bike to the U. Day will feature bicycle-themed vendors. Students, faculty and staff who bring their bikes to register with campus police can get a free lock.

Sept. 11: At Chef's Choice, chefs from University Dining Services will offer demonstrations using market produce.

Sept. 18: For Buzz About Bees, the U. Beekeepers Association will bring honey and products from campus hives.

Sept. 25: Local animal adoption groups and pet-themed vendors will attend Happy Pets, Healthy People.

Oct. 2: At Cooking on an Adventure, learn about lightweight foods that fit in a backpack.

Oct. 9: For the finale, dessert — local chocolate, pastry and fresh fruit vendors will offer Sustainable Sweets. —
