Report: Utah's August was extra cool and almost doubly rainy

It was one wet, cool August in northern Utah.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City measured rainfall 11 days this past month, which is almost twice as many as the normal six. Even last year, there were only seven days with measurable rainfall.

"We kind of got into our normal monsoon season … [which was] more persistent than we normally see," said weather service meteorologist Monica Traphagan.

All of that precipitation brought about 1.77 inches of rain to at least Salt Lake City, which is well above the average 0.86 inches the city receives in August, according to a weather service report released Sunday. It's even more compared to last year's August, which was especially dry at 0.16 inches.

The stormy weather even cooled down the state. There were only 10 days with temperatures in the 90s or higher, compared to last year's blistering 27 days. The average is 16, according to the weather service.

But the wet trend isn't continuing into September thus far. The forecast predicts no more rain this week.
