Women's soccer: BYU falls 2-1 to Baylor

Provo • BYU's nationally ranked women's soccer team will not go undefeated this season.

The No. 21-ranked Cougars were surprised 2-1 by unranked Baylor on Monday afternoon in front of more than 4,500 fans at South Field. BYU falls to 1-1-2 with a loss that snapped its seven-match home undefeated streak just three days after knocking off Tennessee 1-0 on the road.

The Bears (4-2) fell 2-1 at Utah Valley on Friday, but made the most of their limited opportunities against the Cougars. Baylor took a 1-0 lead just before halftime when Justine Hovden beat BYU goalkeeper Katherine Snyder with a rocket from outside the box.

Shortly after halftime, Baylor's Precious Akanyirige made it 2-0 when she took advantage of a mistake for an easy goal.

The Cougars controlled the action from there on out, to no avail.

Sophomore Ashley Hatch's shot in the second half hit the left post and then the right post before falling harmlessly into the hands of Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss.

It was that kind of day for the Cougars, who outshot the Bears 8-5.

Hatch left the game shortly after that after being kicked in the ankle and did not return.

BYU freshman Bizzy Phillips scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in the 89th minute. It was BYU's first home loss since Sept. 26, 2013 against Denver.
