As pitched shoes go, it was a decidedly low sinker, albeit painfully in the strike zone. That's why this footwear hurler went to the bench — of a Salt Lake County jail cell.

Salt Lake City police say they were called to an apartment complex at 135 S. 500 West about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday after a fight broke out between an alleged intruder, an apartment security guard and a tenant.

The 69-year-old suspect apparently had been banned from the complex earlier for threatening residents. SLCPD said the guard confronted the man, and while he was trying to confirm the suspect's status, the man attacked him.

Another tenant came to the guard's aid and was himself attacked by the suspect, police said.

When officers responding to a 911call arrived and attempted to question the suspect, he pulled off a shoe — police did not say whether it was a loafer, sneaker, boot or wingtip — and threw it, striking one officer in the groin.

Officers subdued the man, arrested him and booked him into jail on suspicion of assault on a police officer.
