Basketball is Utah's most popular prep sport

While more Utah schools play basketball than any other sport, more boys play football and girls participate in track.

The Utah High School Activities Association released its 10 most popular boys and girls sports by participation and by school at its recent Board of Trustees meeting in Midvale.

On the boys side, there are 132 teams playing basketball were followed by track, cross country, baseball, golf, wrestling, football, soccer, tennis and swimming.

As far as boys participation, there are 8,638 athletes playing football. Track is the next most popular by participation numbers with 5,104 followed by basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, cross country, swimming, tennis and golf.

More girls participate in track than in any other Utah high school sport. That number is 4,520. Girls' participation is followed by volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, cross country, tennis, drill team, swimming and golf.

Basketball is the most popular sport by school, with 127 teams playing. That is followed by volleyball, track, cross country, golf, softball, soccer, drill team, tennis and swimming.
