Police ID driver of triple-fatal crash in Layton

Posted: 5:10 PM- The driver of a pickup that crashed into a car in Layton last week, killing a mother and two of her children, has been identified as 25-year-old David Leavitt.

Police, however, on Tuesday were awaiting blood toxicology results to determine whether to screen charges with the district attorney, said Sgt. Mark Chatlin.

Leavitt, of Layton, was driving north on U.S. Highway 89 Thursday afternoon when the Toyota Tacoma truck he was driving drifted into southbound traffic and hit a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 39-year-old Janine Howard near 2200 North, Chatlin said.

Howard and her 11-year-old son, Matthew, died Thursday. Howard's 8-year-old daughter, Esther, died a day later at Primary Children's Medical Center. Howard's two other children remained in Primary Children's on Tuesday: Caleb, 7, remained in critical condition; and Rachel, 13, was in stable condition, Chatlin said.

Leavitt remained in stable condition at Ogden Regional Medical Center, Chatlin said. He had a broken back and ankle.

An account, called the Howard Family Relief Fund, was created at Washington Mutual Credit Union to assist the family, which does not have medical insurance.
