A Herriman Scout leader was charged Thursday with aggravated sexual abuse of a child for allegedly molesting an 11-year-old boy.

The charge is a first-degree felony.

A charging document filed in 3rd District Court alleges the boy went to the home of his Scout leader, 46-year-old Lyle Scott Mackay, to play a board game on March 18. After arriving, the boy learned Mackay wanted to watch a college basketball game instead and took him into the bedroom, according to the document.

The charges say Mackay had the boy sit on his lap and then fondled him. The child told his mother what had happened and law enforcement was contacted that evening, the charges say.

Mackay allegedly told a Unified Police Department detective that he had also been the victim's Cub Scout leader when the boy was younger and they had done a lot together previously, but with other Scouts and leaders.

The alleged March 18 incident was the first time Mackay had been alone with the boy inside his bedroom, according to the charging document.

Emails and phone calls Friday seeking comment from the Boy Scouts' Great Salt Lake Council on the arrest, and to find out if any disciplinary action had been taken, were not immediately answered.

An initial court appearance for Mackay was set for Tuesday.
