Eddie BrillShow of the week • If it appears this weekend will be on the chilly side, consider seeing Eddie Brill, who has been warming up David Letterman's crowds (in the famously brisk Ed Sullivan Theater) for nearly 15 years. Earlier this month, he made his 10th appearance on Letterman's show. Besides his warmup act, Brill selects the comedians who appear on Letterman's show, is the creative director of The Great American Comedy Festival (held every year in Johnny Carson's hometown), is an editor and consultant for comedic pieces in Reader's Digest magazine, and is an acclaimed teacher of comedy. (He will also conduct one of his all-day workshops in Utah this weekend.) "I literally have 10 jobs," said Brill in a Tribune interview. "But stand-up is my favorite job." He says that every time he teaches a workshop, he learns something from his class. With so much experience, though, he knows what to look for when picking comedians to land a much-coveted spot on "Letterman." "I look for a soul," Brill said. "It's like hearing Nina Simone. It's like hearing God."
