One man was arrested and authorities on Friday were looking for a second suspect in connection with recent burglaries that included the theft of a police officer's rifle earlier this week.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the rifle, a semi-automatic AR-15, had been taken from a locked UPD squad car in Herriman late Monday, the same night several neighboring vehicles also were broken into by thieves.

The weapon was recovered Tuesday night when SWAT officers served an unrelated narcotic search warrant at a home near 200 West and 700 South.

Six men were arrested there and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges ranging from auto theft, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substances.

Flash forward to about 1:20 a.m. Friday when another UPD unit was nearly struck by a silver Suburu Impreza near 1000 E. 2100 South. When the UPD officers tried to pull the vehicle over, it sped away. The officers did not pursue it.

However, when they ran the car's license plates, the officers learned it had been linked to the rifle theft and the other burglaries in Herriman. A short time later, the vehicle was found parked near 700 East and Wilson Avenue (roughly 1800 South).

Officers surrounded the area and called in a K-9 unit. One person was tracked by a police dog and when the 19-year-old man attempted to run he was taken down by the dog and arrested.

The man driving the car got away.
