One person was injured in an ice climbing accident Friday afternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

The accident was reported around noon. Two people were ice climbing in the canyon near 5500 East when a 47-year-old climber from Tremonton fell and suffered a broken ankle, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson. The other climber was not injured.

Special ice climbers were dispatched to help, Hutson said, but the climbers' accident happened in an area 2 miles up the canyon known as Great White Icicle, a place that is difficult to reach. Search and rescue workers brought the climbers down from the canyon around 4:30 p.m.

No other information was immediately available.

Ice climbing is a sport similiar to rock climbing, where climbers use gear to go up ice-coverered cliffs or frozen waterfalls.
