Orem • The Longhorns were going to win a championship — that had been long decided — but they needed a champion. With five early losses in the finals, Altamont was backing into a team state title.

But Zach Hatch, a returning state champion, gave the Altamont crowd reason to cheer. With a first-round pin, the 152-pound senior added a spark to the celebration and helped lead off for three more individual champions.

"It feels awesome, like no other feeling in the world," Hatch said. "I did feel some extra pressure to get the team going. We tried to tell ourselves we didn't have it in the bag."

The Longhorns repeated as state champions in Class 1A after taking an insurmountable lead on the first day of competition. Although the team didn't perform quite as well as hoped in the finals, going 4-for-10, it solidified the advantage with four individual state champions.

The senior class was the star, as the Longhorns' returning titlists — Hatch, Landon Miles, Kyle Foy and Dalton Smith — each won their respective weight classes. The celebration was mixed with the bittersweet emotion of seeing the seniors complete their careers.

"I've been with these guys since I was a kid," 285-pound winner Smith said. "It's sad that it's our last match together, but I think we all did our best."

In all, Altamont had 15 of its 18 wrestlers place, including 10 in the top two of their weight class. Divisional rival Duschesne followed up with a second-place finish, with nine wrestlers placing and four individual champions. Last year's runner-up, Monticello finished in a distant third.
