NCAA: Baylor wrong to criticize

College basketball • The NCAA says Baylor is wrong in criticizing the handling of a case that got freshman Perry Jones ruled ineligible just before the start of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

Jones was ruled out after the NCAA said he and his family received improper benefits from an AAU coach before enrolling at Baylor. Baylor issued a release then in which athletic director Ian McCaw said the decision appeared "to be inconsistent with other recent widely discussed NCAA decisions." In a later TV interview, McCaw referenced the Ohio State and Auburn football teams. In a statement Thursday, the NCAA says Baylor's criticism is "off base" related to timing, process and precedent.

• The NCAA on Thursday accepted SMU's self-imposed two years of probation and recruiting restrictions for the men's basketball team after staff sent approximately 100 impermissible text messages to the parents of at least seven prospects. The school said it received "erroneous advice from the former director of compliance, who advised that the staff could send text messages to parents but not prospects." The texts were sent over a two-year period, from 2007-09, and were limited to only SMU's men's basketball team.
