Granger kicker Devan Durfey stepped onto the field with only seconds remaining, poised to make the headlines. The choice, however, of whether to make the headlines for the right reason or the wrong reason was up to him.

His missed extra point earlier in the fourth quarter had left his team's comeback effort just short.

But from the left hash, 30 yards out, Durfey stepped through his kick and watched it sail through the uprights with nine seconds remaining to cinch the Lancers' thrilling 37-35 victory over the Bulldogs.

"After the extra point, it was, 'if the score stays like this, it's bad news,' " Durfey said.

As for the game-winning kick, Durfey summed up the moment simply with a "Hell yeah," grinning ear-to-ear when he said it.

It was all Judge most of the game. The Bulldogs took control after jumping to a 21-7 lead, thanks to two interceptions — one of which Casey Jones returned 20 yards for a score.

But Granger pieced together a touchdown drive, capped by quarterback Jordan Hernandez's eight-yard scramble with three seconds left in the half that pulled the Lancers to within 21-14.

Judge took control again in the third quarter behind the flashy running of Jack Barnett, who rushed for two scores, and the grittier running of Miles Ellis. But when Barnett fumbled a snap on Judge's first fourth-quarter drive and Mike Laumua recovered it for Granger, the momentum shifted.

Two plays later, Asi Vakalahi raced 53 yards to give the Lancers a first and goal, only seven points down. Vakalahi sat out nearly the entire third quarter after rushing for 89 first-half yards. He finished with 194 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

"I know Asi probably wasn't happy [sitting out the third quarter]," Granger coach Alex Gerke said. "But we have some other guys that we like to spell him with to give him good, fresh legs when it counts."

Hernandez followed with a touchdown plunge that was soured by Durfey's extra-point gaffe that sailed wide right. Six minutes of game time later, the senior kicker got his chance to be a hero. —
