Two scholars called the "odd couple" of Mormon studies are set to discuss "The FLDS and the Outside World" at a lecture at Weber State University next Monday. It's at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Lindquist Alumni Center, and is free and open to the public. It sounds interesting: Newell Bringhurst, who I had lunch with before the Warren Jeffs trial, has written several books, some of them probing controversial sensitive points of Mormon history, including the church's history with black people. Craig Foster, meanwhile, is a researcher at the Mormon Church's Family History Library. Together, they've written both The Persistence of Polygamy and The Mormon Quest for the Presidency. Monday's lecture promises to trace the history of polygamy from the 1953 raid on Short Creek (now Colorado City/Hildale) through the more recent headlines about the Warren Jeffs sexual assault trial in Texas.
