Orem • An oft-repeated adage in sports points to how difficult it is to keep beating a quality team over and over during the same season.

And maybe the Piute volleyball team also believed that to be true, heading into Saturday's Class 1A state championship match against a Panguitch team that had beaten it three times already this season.

Sometimes, though, a team just has your number, and when it does, all the clichés in the world don't mean much.

The fourth meeting of the season between the Region 20 came Saturday, and — aside from it taking place at Utah Valley University with a state title on the line — not much was different, as the tall, talented Bobcats of Panguitch roughed up Piute early and rolled to a 25-7, 20-25, 25-17, 25-9 victory.

"They pretty much put up a big wall and just pounded away at us," Piute coach Shauna Bagley said.

Six-foot junior Chesney Campbell and 6-1 senior Darri Frandsen took turns stuffing the life out of the T-birds' attack, as Panguitch blew out to an easy first set victory.

After giving up the first point of the match, the Bobcats then went on a 17-3 run. Campbell scored eight of those points, while Frandsen accounted for three.

Campbell finished with a total of 11 kills and two blocks while Frandsen added 11 kills and three blocks.

"Chesney, she can hit the ball, can't she?" Panguitch coach Cherri Frandsen said at the end of the game. "She can put it down, and she had a great game. That first game, I think everything she touched found the floor."

The Piute attack was paced by seniors Shaylee Gleave and Paige Jessen. Gleave ended with nine kills from the outside while Jessen garnered eight kills and a pair of blocks in the middle.

After losing the first set, the Thunderbirds started well in the second. Leading 12-10, Jessen played a huge role in a 6-1 run to open the gap as she scored three kills and a block in that stretch.

But that was the big highlight of the match, on the whole, for Piute, as Panguitch mostly just put the clamps on defensively.

"At first I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect," said Panguitch's 5-11 junior middle blocker Taylor Bennett, who also piled up 11 kills and three blocks. "We knew they'd always go to either Paige or Shaylee, so when Shaylee was on the front row, we kind of snuck over to her. We had to block her a little bit different."

The victorious Bobcats also got frontline contribution from outside hitter Whittni Orton, who finished with four kills and a block. Last week, Orton won the Class 1A state cross-country championship while Panguitch libero Catania Holman finished second in the long distance running race.

Although it was the first volleyball championship for Panguitch under coach Frandsen, these 'Cats have been cramming first-place state honors in the school's trophy case of late.

Panguitch also won the girls' state basketball championship last March, then conquered all in track in May. The streak for team titles continued with the Orton-paced triumph in cross-country.

When they broke the volleyball huddle for the last time, with first-place trophy in hand, it was with the cheer "Two more."

"It feels good. We want to try to win in every sport that we can and just have the sportsmanship while we do it," Bennett said. —
