A person was in critical condition Wednesday night after being trapped in a car that caught fire in West Jordan.

A car crashed into a pole near 3400 West 9000 South, causing the vehicle to catch on fire, according to KUTV 2News. The driver was trapped inside.

The first officer to arrive at the crash site climbed inside the burning vehicle to help the trapped driver, according to the West Jordan police. The officer was treated for smoke inhalation.

Rescue crews extinguished the fire and extricated the person who was trapped in the car near Salt Lake Community Campus, according to West Jordan police. The person was transported to Jordan Valley Hospital in critical condition.

Police said westbound 9000 South would be shut down from 3200 West to Bangerter Highway "for quite a while."
