This is a list of the 47 people who were murdered statewide in 2014, excluding negligent homicides and cases that prosecutors deemed justified. Click on the links or scroll through the photo gallery to learn more about each case.
Xander Toliver, 1 • Jan. 2. Xander was allegedly killed by his mother's Salt Lake City boyfriend.
Kenadee Oliva, 13; Isabella Oliva, 7 • Jan. 14. Kenadee and Isabella's mother allegedly shot and killed them in a murder-suicide at their Syracuse home.
Kelly Boren, 32; Haley Boren, 5; Joshua "Jaden" Boren, 7; Marie King, 55 • Jan. 16. Lindon police officer Joshua Boren shot and killed his wife, their two children and his mother-in-law in a murder-suicide at their Lindon home.
Shirley Sharp, 85 • Jan. 25. Sharp's body was found inside her Murray home after firefighters were called there to extinguish a fire. Christen James Spencer was later charged with her death.
Kevin Meik, 63 • Jan. 29. Meik, a former police officer, was shot and killed in his Sandy home. His murder remains unsolved.
Cory Wride, 44 • Jan. 30. Wride, a Utah County Sheriff's sergeant, was shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car during a traffic stop. His alleged shooter, Jose Angel Garcia-Jauregui, died after the ensuing police chase, and the alleged driver Meagan Grunwald has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, among other felonies.
Aiden Goff, 2 • Jan. 31. Aiden died of a methadone overdose at his Tooele home after his mother inadvertently gave him the drug, mistaking it for Gatorade.
Jean Chamberlain, 70 • Feb. 16. A Roy man is accused of killing Chamberlain, his ailing wife. Prosecutors say her husband had amassed a small library of suspicious titles, such as "The Peaceful Pill Handbook" and "The Final Exit."
Lincoln Penland, 8 months • Feb. 19. A Roy day care operator is accused of killing the baby boy, whose father found him cold and unresponsive when he picked him up. Doctors later discovered he had sustained a head injury.
Geraldine Bommario, 58 • March 19. Police say the St. George woman's neighbor killed her, stole her car and tried to use stolen collectible coins to buy gas. The suspect was found the next day alongside the burned car.
Margaret Steffey, 59 • April 16. Police say a teenager killed Steffey, then stuffed her body into a crawl space inside her Taylorsville home.
Joaquin Gonzalez, 33 • April 19. The Chicago man was pulled out of his car and stabbed to death in downtown Salt Lake City. A man, Harlin Ramos, was later arrested and charged.
Jesse Horowitz, 17 • April 25. Horowitz, a high school senior, died after a fight outside the Stansbury Park Elementary school.
A.W., 26 • April 26. A man, identified only by his initials in court documents, died after he was stabbed on a San Juan County reservation. His brother, Donovon White, was later indicted for homicide.
Carlos Martinez, 40 • May 4. Martinez was standing in front of his house when someone shot and killed him. His murder remains unsolved.
Cammi Miller, 34 • May 10. Miller's body turned up south of Cedar City. Her murder remains unsolved.
Reginald Searcy, 45 • May 14. Searcy's wife stabbed and killed the Tennessee man while they were staying at a Beaver motel.
Belen Perez, 60 • May 21. Perez's son found her strangled in their Provo home. Her murder remains unsolved.
Elgie Mills Jr., 43 • May 28. A Layton man allegedly admitted to police that he fired a gun three times at Mills in an Ogden storage shed.
Theodore Kelbach, 49 • May 31. Police say another man shot Kelbach in his Kearns home in what investigators believe was a fit of jealousy.
Kaye Lynn Spackman, 36 • June 8. Spackman's estranged husband allegedly stabbed her in the garage of her Layton home.
Evan Cuch, 23 • June 11. Cuch died after a man allegedly fired into a group of people in the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation in northeastern Utah.
Marilee Poulson, 51 • June 16. Sanpete County Sheriff's investigators believe Poulson's son shot and killed her in a murder-suicide at her Fairview Heights home.
Francisco Colon, 40 • June 23. Colon was shot to death while he was inside a car in a South Salt Lake alley. Prosecutors eventually charged two people with murder.
Mike Sidwell, 42 • July 3. Sidwell was allegedly shot in Lindon by his wife's ex-husband, who allegedly went door-to-door with a shotgun and a handgun, and broke into three apartments, while searching for his ex-wife.
Janet Goode, 57 • July 10. Goode's stepfather shot her outside his Parowan home. No motive for the shooting has ever been publicly revealed.
MacKenzie Madden, 19; Johnathan Sadler, 25 • July 14. Madden and Sadler were shot in Madden's Logan apartment. Their shooter later turned the assault rifle on himself.
Holly Carges, 34 • July 17. Carges was found strangled in an unused room of a downtown Salt Lake City hotel. Prosecutors later charged Jeffrey Skog with murder.
Curtis Hardinger, 34 • July 29. The Vernal man's girlfriend allegedly shot him after he injured her, according to police. However, it's possible the shooting may be ruled justified self-defense.
Dennis Robbins, 70 • Aug. 1. The Olympus Cove man's son allegedly beat him to death with a metal bar.
K. L., 14 months • Aug. 25. The girl, identified only as K.L. in court documents, died after police say her mother's boyfriend beat her in an Ogden motel room.
Melanie Callison, 46 • Sept. 11. Callison's husband pleaded guilty to killing and dismembering the Richfield woman at a mountain campsite.
Cynthia Osborne-Candland, 50 • Sept. 12. Osborne-Candland was shot by her husband at their Ogden home in a suspected murder-suicide.
Gustavo Jarquin, 18 • Sept. 18. Jarquin's body was found on Salt Lake City's west side. He died of a gunshot wound, and his murder remains unsolved.
Tawnee Baird, 21 • Oct. 18. Baird died after her girlfriend allegedly stabbed her while the two were driving to Ogden.
Shawn Multine, 45 • Oct. 21. Cedar City police say a man forced his way into a home and shot Multine with a rifle.
Jamie Blalack, 29 • Nov. 2. Blalack died after a man allegedly shot him while leaving a Salt Lake City 7-Eleven, where Blalack was a clerk.
Alice Williamson, 74 • Nov. 11. Police say Williamson's son shot her in Millcreek Canyon in a murder-suicide.
Bradley Hancock, 23 • Nov. 15. Hancock died after gunfire erupted outside a Salt Lake City concert. Police say he and the suspect had an altercation during the concert, at which point the suspect shot Hancock.
Orlando Roybal, 32 • Dec. 4. South Salt Lake police say Roybal was killed in an ambush shooting while sitting in a parked car.
Candice Melo, 26 • Dec. 18. Melo died after her roommate allegedly shot her outside their Sandy home.
Mario Velaya-Zuniga, 32 • Dec. 19. The man was shot and killed on the sidewalk near the downtown Salt Lake City homeless shelter.
