Residents of the southern Utah hamlet of Richfield had a mildly disturbing interruption to their slumber early Thursday morning — a 3.1 magnitude earthquake.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations recorded the 12:27 a.m. temblor's epicenter as being about a mile west of the Sevier County town of 7,500. The quake rumbled from a depth of 5 miles, but did not cause any injury or property damage on the surface, according to public safety dispatchers.
