Ogden • So much for Lone Peak being vulnerable coming into the Class 5A boys' basketball tournament.

It was just like old times for the four-time defending state champions as they rolled to an impressive 99-74 victory over Copper Hills.

The Knights weren't happy about losing their final two regular season games.

"We weren't real thrilled with what happened last week," said Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis. "That's not Lone Peak basketball. We came in with something to prove."

That was obvious.

The Knights shot 80 percent from the 3-point line in the first half, with Frank Jackson and Nick Curtis a combined 7 for 7. The team hit 63.3 percent from the field.

And the scary thing was that Copper Hills and its fine junior center Porter Hawkins, who had 20 of his 28 points in the first half, weren't playing that bad.

"Nobody in this state is going to beat them if they shoot like that," said Copper Hills coach Andrew Blanchard. "We played really well and scored higher than we have scored all year. We couldn't get a stop."

Jackson was the chief culprit in the onslaught, scoring 32 points and dishing out six assists. But he was the first to admit he wasn't the only Lone Peak player on fire.

"We played some team basketball and the ball went in the hoop," he analyzed. "We came out aggressive, played some defense and tried to push the ball."

Curtis added 27 points and six rebounds, Christian Popoola contributed 21 and Dylan Hedin hit 13 points as Lone Peak broke it open with an 11-0 run late in the first quarter and was never seriously challenged.

Indeed, any sign of weakness last week quickly disappeared as the Knights established themselves as the team to beat.
