A House committee Tuesday recommended a bill that will let adults learn the medical histories of their sperm-donor fathers or egg-donor mothers.

HB249 is sponsored by Rep. Dixon Pitcher, R-Ogden. It next goes to the full House.

Bill Cordray of Salt Lake City said he was 68 before he finally learned the identity of his genetic father, but it took modern genetic tests.

Cordray said the bill is about the rights of children to know "where we come from."

The bill would not allow those conceived through "assisted reproduction" to learn the identities of their natural parents. Donors already must submit medical histories at clinics, Rep. Ray Ward, R-Bountiful, noted.
