A rare midweek movie opening today: "Freetown," the LDS-themed adventure drama, opening at more than 100 theaters nationwide.

Director Garrett Batty, following up in his missionary thriller "The Saratov Approach," tells the true story of a group of native-born LDS missionaries in Liberia in 1990, at the height of that country's civil war. Determined to continue to teach and proselytize, the missionaries — aided by a church volunteer (Henry Adofo) — make a perilious drive from Monrovia to Freetown, in neighboring Sierra Leone.

The movie has exciting moments, a dollop of comedy, and a thoughtful depiction of the missionary zeal that drives the characters.
