A California man died after he crashed into Utah Lake while paragliding near Saratoga Springs.

Siegfried C. Muhlhauser, 59, was being towed behind a boat Friday evening near the south end of the city. Witnesses say he was conducting "drills" to simulate responding to in-flight emergencies, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

But about 6 p.m., "something happened" and he fell into the water from about 150 feet in the air, according to a sheriff's office news release.

"The man was under water for several minutes before witnesses got him into a boat," the release adds.

Witnesses and emergency responders tried to revive Muhlhauser, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Muhlhauser was from Murrieta, Calif.
