Dimple Dell Fitness and Recreation Center just might be Sandy's best-kept secret.

Evolving over the past few years into a multifaceted family facility, Salt Lake County-owned Dimple Dell offers unique and flexible programs catering to the ever-changing interests of this community.

Not only is a fitness membership program offered, as well as recreational staples such as Tee Ball, swimming lessons and soccer, but new programs such as horseback riding, water polo and company meetings are available.

"We keep the facility busy," said Kristin Riker, recreation program manager at Dimple Dell, 10670 S. 1000 East. "We're always trying to add more, do more," she said.

Wait. Company meetings at a recreational facility? It's true.

During a break, employees can foster teamwork or combat meeting-induced stress by climbing the

rock wall.

"They can do an hour of rock climbing to kind of break up the monotony of their meetings. Do something a little bit different," said Riker.

Prices for the meetings vary.

A program at Sandy's Alta Hills Farm teaches children how to take care of and ride horses. This weeklong, all-day riding camp for elementary school-age children is offered through Dimple Dell.

SportFit, recently created in response to community requests for programs to deal with childhood obesity, is for 10- 14-year-old children. The program stresses cardiovascular health, muscular strength and flexibility with activities such as weight lifting, floor hockey and track.

"There are a lot of kids who don't really fit into a regular sport program. They haven't found what sport they really like and are good at," said Riker. "This helps them be more prepared to do those sports, [get in] physical shape or lose some weight."

Modified workouts for SportFit participants are also available. The center also offers chess classes.

For adults craving some of that ever-elusive down time, the fitness room, lap swimming and aerobics, can offer a break.

Basic membership passes are available for families and individuals, and pass-holders have use of the fitness room, pool, track and gym. A Gold membership enables pass holders to use other Salt Lake County recreational facilities.

The catch: Dimple Dell is noisy and full of children.

"We are truly a family facility," said Riker. "It is how it was designed, built and set up so that parents could work out while their kids were in fitness programs. We have a lot of kids here. It's definitely a specialty niche for families."
