Restaurant inspectors shut down a Salt Lake City sandwich shop earlier this week after it was linked to a food-borne illness outbreak and employees were found working while sick.

According to a report on the Salt Lake County Health Department website, the Jimmy John's at 605 E. 400 South was shut down Tuesday "in response to a food-borne illnesses outbreak and ongoing illness connected to the establishment."

The restaurant is a Salt Lake landmark of sorts. It is in the former site of Snelgrove Ice Cream, known for its rotating double-scoop ice cream sign, now painted black.

The Jimmy John's was one of three restaurants shut down this week by county healthy inspectors. The Rice King Chinese restaurant in Midvale and the Kawali Cafe and Reception center in Sandy also were closed for creating "imminent health hazards," reports state.

All three restaurants can reopen when they have fixed health problems and inspectors deem them safe for consumers.

While at Jimmy John's, inspectors found 11 health violations, including employees working in the establishment while ill; an employee failing to wash hands when changing gloves; an employee removing a loaf of bread from the pan with bare hands; and fresh bread stored on the dirty dish drain board.

At Rice King, 755 E. Fort Union Blvd., the health violations include no functional handwashing sink; dishes rinsed over raw meat; insecticide spray used in the kitchen; cabbage stored on the floor, a dirty food mixer; and vehicle maintenance tools stored in the kitchen.

The Kawali Cafe, 1350 E. Coppercreek Road, was cited for no hot water; cooked chicken, cooked pork and raw eggs held at improper temperatures; moldy squash stored with usable food products; and medicines belonging to employees not stored properly.
