The head of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts has been named to a spot in a prestigious national museum organization.

Gretchen Dietrich, UMFA's executive director, has been appointed to the board of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD), a national professional organization that represents 244 art museum directors in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Dietrich is one of seven new trustees named to the board, who were affirmed at the organizations's annual meeting in Detroit last month. AAMD touts the importance of art museums, cultivates leadership among art-museum directors, and promotes standards of excellence in museum practices.

Dietrich joined UMFA in February 2008, as director of public programs and curatorial affairs. She was named interim director in April 2009, a post that became permanent in August 2010.
